feeling rooted & nourished this spring

we are not in nature, we are nature

Here we are in the midst of a seasonal shift, bringing with it quite a rigor. This spirited burst of energy is what’s needed to crack a seed and help it bloom into a budding plant. To till dry, brittle dirt into fertile soil that will produce the vivid greenery and blossoms that we treasure most about spring.

Spring’s tumult isn’t only taking place in nature. In Yoga and Ayurveda, it’s thought that the human body is a microcosm of the universe, meaning that we may also be experiencing the season’s dramatic swings—the restlessness, the heaviness, the lethargy.

It calls for us to till our own inner soil.

We can help make way for this rising energy, and a wonderful way to do this is one layer at a time through the chakras.

spring cleansing through the chakras

Chakras are areas of condensed energy collected in areas of our subtle body. The locations of our seven main energy centers—Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and Crown—correspond to our major organ systems and nerve complexes, so as we bring our attention to ourselves in these areas, it can create an impact on our health.

Harmonizing with spring requires a certain balancing act, building stability while encouraging fluidity. Rooting while nourishing the new. We want to ground but not get stuck in the mud; we want to be stable but flow along with change.

Our practice can help us find moment-to-moment balance in this transitional time, and we can begin with the Root Chakra. We can practice landing on the ground, connecting with earth. We can link up with its strength and stability through our feet and our legs.

And as we journey into the growth and expansion of summer, our Root Chakra will continue to remain the foundation of all of our practices.

root to rise: root chakra practice

a 20-minute slow flow to feel more grounded & enlivened
This short practice is designed to help you feel stronger, more stable, and grounded. Using blocks as weights, you’ll build awareness of your feet on the ground, nourishing yourself with the energy of the earth. The gentle load of the blocks will generate just the right amount of heat to begin to dissolve the stagnation of the season and prepare you for the upcoming expansion.
