sky gazing: an expanding practice without losing yourself

In the fullness of summer, it’s easy to feel pulled outward—into long days, full calendars, and the fiery energy of doing. But summer is also an opportunity to open without burning out… to expand without drifting… to feel more spacious without losing your center.

That’s what the Sky Gazing Meditation invites us into.

This beloved practice from my book Deep Listening offers a gentle, grounding way to reconnect with the vastness of life—without leaving your body or your breath behind.

And right now, in the heart of summer, it may be the exact medicine we need.

instant pause & reset: open sky meditation

A 60-second practice for softening, expanding, and reconnecting with presence

Begin by relaxing your body into the support beneath you.

Let your eyes rest softly on the sky, or if you're indoors, gently close them and imagine the sky.

Without focusing on anything in particular, allow your gaze to open. Imagine your awareness expanding out in all directions.

You might imagine that your mind is as open and vast as the sky itself.

If thoughts arise, notice them like clouds passing through. No need to push them away. Let them come and go.

Continue to soften your body. Allow the ground to hold you.

Let your breath flow naturally. Spacious. Unhurried.

You might silently say: I am spacious. I am grounded. I am at ease.

Rest in this open presence as long as you’d like.

When you feel complete, slowly bring your awareness back to your body and the earth beneath you. Gently reorient to your surroundings.
