Dharma Talk: Pausing is an act of love that starts in the body

"Pausing is not an escape from life—it is an act of love that returns you to yourself."

—Jillian Pransky

In the last 30 years I’ve been practicing and teaching yoga and mindfulness, our society has never felt so divided and separated. It seems to me that there’s no time to lose in taking our practices off the mat and into our daily lives.

Pausing is a practice—which I wrote about in my new book, The Power of the Pause—that was born out of connecting with people who are struggling in this moment on our planet. It can be challenging to be present with each other without the tools to do so.

That’s where the Pause comes in.

We train in Pausing on the mat so we can have more choices in every moment that counts in life—whether it’s difficult, filled with grief, or joyful. The thing is, we can’t think our way out of stress, or talk our way out of fight or flight.

Pausing starts in the body. It’s a rewiring of the nervous system. That’s why my nervous system work includes a lot of somatic movement and awareness.

Earlier this year I shared a dharma talk about this topic at a retreat in the Bahamas. Now, I’d love to share it with you. The discussion also features a short reading from my book and a practice to help you embody the pause.
